Plants and Animals @ the Troubadour

And now inducting to the pantheon of great live bands, Plants and Animals, who could not have been more spectacular Thursday night. Playing to a sparsely populated room of mostly rabid fans, Plants filled the space with a presence of a band 10 times their stature. The mood was ceaselessly playful and Lead Singer, Warren Spicer, got some traction from introducing himself as "Amanda...Hugandkiss" (He's Canadian give him a break) and launching into diatribe about how everyone in the audience is probably a celebrity "on some show I've never seen." It was a fitting bit of ironic self-reflexiveness for a band that named its latest album "La La Land" and which features tracks entitled "Tom Cruz" and "American Idol." If the cult of celebrity is a preoccupation, maybe it's rightfully so- a band whose talent so exceeds its level of recognition deserves some idle adulation too, you know, just to even things out.
