I Hate Your Blog/ I Hate Your Monthly Playlist

Sorrrrrrry! We've been so lazy this month that for your patience you receive an entire 30 song playlist. This is the definitive list of what you should be listening to right now, including previews of soon to be released tracks from the new albums of LCD Soundsystem, Broken Social Scene, and The National.

Incidentally, Late Spring/Early Summer is a magical time for live music in Los Angeles. Here's an early list of the shows I have tickets to in the coming months:

May 5- Two Door Cinema Club- Troubadour
May 19- Broken Bells- Henry Fonda
May 20- Edward Sharpe- Royce Hall
May 27- Plants & Animals- Troubadour

And here's where it gets really crazy:

June 2- Miike Snow- Henry Fonda
June 3- Mumford and Sons w/ The Middle East- Henry Fonda
June 4- Local Natives- Troubadour
June 5- LCD Soundsystem- Fox Theater
June 6- The XX- Wiltern

And lastly:

June 22- Stars- Troubadour

So in other words, if you know of a good 12 step program for compulsive ticket buying, please don't hesitate to contact me.

National Wear Your Sunglasses To Work Day

Sooooo bleary-eyed and I didn't even party while I was in the desert. But maybe having your lungs compressed for a solid 5 hours in the human sardine can that was the front stage pit for Jonsi, Phoenix, and Thom Yorke can have the same effect. If you missed it, Sunday was epic. So epic in fact, that seeing Thom Yorke from the pit doesn't even crack my top 5 shows of the day. Notwithstanding the transcendental versions of "Paranoid Android" and "Everything in Its Right Place," I'm pretty sure I could go the rest of my mid 20's without another jarringly amelodic Atoms for Peace number.

Anyway, for all my strung out Coachella heads seeking penance for a weekend of decadence, here's a little something to ease the comedown:

Forgiveness Rock Record, the upcoming majestic offering from Broken Social Scene, is streaming on NPR and for no extra charge on ihatekidslikeyou.com. For those of you that had a particularly rough weekend, just press the little arrow below, and sonic awesomeness will magically ensue.

Odds & Ends

Did you miss us? Nate and I decided to go MIA last week (it's part of our artistic license, deal with it), but we're back in full force for Coachella week! Tomorrow and Thursday we'll be revealing our official Coachella schedules along with our normally acerbic commentary, so stay tuned. There are tons of set time conflicts to resolve this year, but we have no compunctions about Solomonically cutting the baby in half. Until then, here are some quick nuggets to chew on:

- If you'd like to play conflict resolution without our guidance, here are the coachella set times:

http://coachella.com/event/set-times

- If you're wondering why Mew disappeared from the Saturday's setlist, here is the official word from their Myspace.

"MEW are sorry to announce that as a result of unforeseen health issues in the MEW family, we will need to cancel our scheduled performance at Coachella this year. We are extremely disappointed by this cancellation and look forward to playing again soon before our new and old fans. We are sorry for any inconveniences this may have caused and hope to see you soon. Thanks for all your support and understanding."

- I'm hearing that LCD SOUNDSYSTEM (playing Fri 9:05-9:50) are encouraging show attendees to wear all white in honor of their set. So if you're gonna stick with LCD over Little Dragon and Imogen Heap, be apprised.

- Today brought the official U.S. Release of Two Door Cinema Club's, "Tourist History" after its UK release last month. I've been anxiously awaiting this record, which features the undeniably catchy single, "Undercover Martyn." There's also a Passion Pit remix of the same track if you're into that kind of thing. Personally, I'm of the opinion that PP have yet to create a credible remix, but that's a rant for another day...

-Finally, excited to announce I will be at the Echo tomorrow to see The Ruby Suns and Toro Y Moi, two outstanding bands that were unceremoniously left off the Coachella line-up. Let you know what kind of awesomeness ensues...

We'll be dropping our Coachella picks in the days ahead...

- Matt

Phatogram Video: Mouthful of Diamonds

It's true.  I'm more obsessed with Sarah Barthel of Phantogram than I am with Jonsi.  I just attempted to friend her on Facebook.  Will keep you posted with when I receive the official rejection.

In the meantime, enjoy their video....

The Ruby Suns- Fight Softly

I'm wearing a hood to the office- that's super professional, right? It's okay, I look like a Benedictine Monk and it's like 12 different holidays, so I think I have carte blanche to look like I'm rocking a snuggie.

Anyway, it's Good Friday, so that means you get a review replete with off-color, irreverent, inapposite religious references! Joy to the fucking world! Let's get this started...

Thought #1: Rock is to Christianity as Chillwave/Glowfi is to...

Answer: Scientology. Everything is overwrought and hyperconsumed with sounding as if it originated on some spectral plane deep in outer space. Yet, it is appealing precisely because of this escapism. Incidentally, can I be the L. Ron Hubbard of Chillwave? I've introduced you to The Ruby Suns and removed your thetans. Now give me 75 percent of your income.

Ruby Suns Tie-in: Check out the intoxicating "Beam Me Up" sound at the 1:07 mark of "How Kids Fail." If you can resist that uplifting chime or the rising synth line that follows, you're a better man than I (or brainwashed celebrity X).

Thought #2: How would the Gospel of Jesus play out in the Twitter age?

Answer: Rt @ Mhew, dagospeltruth, Skyywalkker, and Jewdoss (Hey bro, where u @? Did u delete ur account?): drnkn btl of wine w Jeez (told u he's backkkk) @ Trous...who's here?

Ruby Suns Tie-In: The rollicking, driving drums and repeated sawtooth loops on "Cranberry" and "Mingus and Pike" conjure feelings of a spaceship ride on the Jesus Resurrection Express. Moreover, when combined with the textured, vaguely Afro-Carribean percussion peppered throughout the rest of the album, TRS seem to have sonically carved their way into a new genre, which I'm gonna go ahead and dub, Astrofarian. Eat your heart out Bob Marley and your 75,000 illegitimate spawn.

Final Thought: Sarcasm and sacrilege aside, I hate myself for liking an album so greatly reminiscent of Meriwether Post Pavilion. Yet, what separates Fight Softly from the aforementioned is Ryan Mcphun's lilting, arresting vocals. Whereas Animal Collective always sound like they’re straining at stool, Mcphun’s effortless falsetto adorns each track like a diaphanous bow. This album is the spawn of Small Black, Tanlines, The Dodos, Yeasayer, and Toro Y Moi and a "must have" for fans of those bands.

Grade: B+

Best Tracks: “Closet Astrologer,” “Cranberry,” “How Kids Fail,” “Mingus and Pike,” and “Two Humans”

-Matt

Jonsi - Go

If you’re a reader of the blog whose name is not Nate or Matt (I’m talking to you 3 random people who were google-ing for kids they hate), you will have noticed the excessive updates regarding this first Jonsi record.  And, yet again, thanks to some pirate friends, I finally have it in my possession and I’m not letting it go.  I dare you to finish listening to this half English, half Icelandic record and not feel inspired.  It is the quintessential pump up mix for fairies, nymphs and other half-bird creatures (see Jonsi pictures) and conjures up feelings of weightlessness, youth, wonder and opportunity, like flying over Never Never Land.  Ya, I just wrote that last sentence and I’m not deleting it.  This record makes me want to put on face paint and feather headbands like scenester middle-school girls (…as if we haven’t stolen enough from the Native Americans.  Damn you, Columbus!).

I have to compare this record to Sigur Ros, since Jonsi is the lead singer and driving force behind Sigur Ros.  On that end, it’s faster, more produced, more structured and yet also more chaotic.  There are a handful of slower songs, like the iconic “Kolnidur,” but the highlights are found in the quick tempos of “Go Do” and “Boy Lilikoi.”  Jonsi is officially my first Coachella commitment to watching the entire set no matter who else is playing at the same time…I don’t care if Kurt Cobain and Elliott Smith come back from the grave and sing a duet at the Mojave Tent.

All I know is that I want to be a Lilikoi Boy...whatever that means.  Deal with it.

& Buy this record.

A+

Best Tracks:  “Kolnidur,” “Go Do,” “Boy Lilikoi,” “Around Us,” & “Grow Till Tall”

Love Child Of: Sigur Ros; Man-Birds; Peter Pan, Tinker Bell and the Lost Boys; creatures in perfect harmony with mother nature; and hope.

ihatekidslikeyou collective rating: 5 out of 5 Jonsi Man-Birds
