I’m utterly convinced that there needs to be some mechanism to reward people for discovering a band before they “blow up” and start getting played 73 times during the morning drive on KIIS-FM. I mean, wouldn’t you have loved to buy stock in La Roux, Miike Snow, Kings of Leon, Passion Pit, or Phoenix in summer of 2008? In this regard, I propose the Bands Futures Index. It functions like an ordinary stock exchange, with initial public offerings (IPO’s) occurring automatically upon the release of a band’s first single. You buy shares of the bands you believe will capture the current zeitgeist and sit back as they catapult into super-stardom, multiplying your investment.

Because the words I type on this site magically bring my zany ideas into being, I feel completely comfortable publicizing my inaugural stock purchase on the exchange. (That’s right, Fuck You, Securities Exchange Commission, the Band Futures Index is outside of your jurisdiction.) My first purchase and blue chip pick of the week is Lookbook (the Minneapolis duo of Grant Cutler and Maggie Morrison), which I was privileged enough to see at The Silverlake Lounge on Wednesday evening. There could have scarcely been more than 15 people in the crowd and they still brought the house down. Fuck, with Maggie’s exuberance and charisma, she could probably sing Korean Karaoke in a morgue and elicit calls for an encore. Anyway, here’s hoping my investment is playing the Henry Fonda or Wiltern next time they’re in town. If anyone needs me, I’ll be putting my Lookbook stock certificate in my Unicorn-owned and operated safety deposit box.
